This sculptural vessel tells the story of human reliance on clay and rock for shelter. Emerging from ground, the base of this work reflects the source of clay: rock, which also served as some of mankinds’ first cave shelters. Traveling up to the shoulder of this vessel, building forms reflect the largely unrecognized fact that up to one-third of the earth’s population still lives in unfired clay homes in modern and third world countries spanning the globe. The top of this vessel depicts the most modern application of clay for shelter in the form of fired brick and the beginnings of classical architecture forming an open gateway of clay as a metaphor to access past and future applications by man.
