Prophetic Revelation Series
Using the word “prophet” in the ancient sense of truth being told, this “Revelation Series” illustrates how truth and virtue are treated in the context of modern societies. The work references our complex relationship with technology and science and its effect on nature, spirituality and human relationships. Attention will be given to the moral implications of mass marketing and consumerism. Useful tools in the chest to help examine moral behavior are worldly children’s tales such as the Book of Virtues by William Bennett and Golem by David Wisniewski. The common, modern UPC code is used as a cultural symbol to create a sudden and dramatic juxtaposition when applied on ceramic, the oldest, most primal and universal art media. This combination creates many questions. Are too many products created as commodities in postmodern societies? Are social virtues trumped by the forces of consumerism? How does the breakneck advancement of technology really affect humanity? Social theorists say that human fascination and use of new technologies always precedes the moral and ethical framework needed to govern its use. With this work, a social commentary is created which engages viewers in analyzing truth to conduct a modern cultural critique.
