The Golem is a Medieval Jewish tale that tells the story of how a holy rabbi used mystical words from the Cabala (holy book) to bring to life a mass of clay that he had formed in the shape of a man. The tale is set in 1580 when the Jews were suffering extreme prejudice and persecution in Prague. The Golem was created to protect the Jews in times of need. The Golem served its purpose, but its creation nearly ended in disaster. The word golem can be found in the bible and is used to describe the lump of clay that formed Adam before he was given life. A golem is a form without intellect or soul. The Golem is a cautionary tale about the limits of human power and may be as pertinent and prophetic today as when it was written. |
